Introducing: The Dashboard

I’m happy to announce the first part of the Unknown Tales transition into greatness is complete.. Allow me to introduce you to the Dashboard.

The Dashboard is a new feature, designed as a personal hub for members, by providing quick and easy access to their options and content.

Currently, on my local development server, it provides:

  • a list of your most recently submitted stories.
  • a list of your most recently submitted chapters.
  • a list of your most recent bookmarks.
  • a list of your most recent chapter reservations.
  • links to management pages for each of the above.

And, hopefully, by the time the site goes live again, it will also provide:

  • an easy way to update your profile.
  • an easy way to change your options.
  • change password and email functionality.

I’m quite excited by this addition because, for the first time, I’m starting to feel that the site is coming together, and providing the sort of extra features that a professional site should. Don’t get me wrong, everything is still a little rough around the corners, and I’ve still got a lot of work to do before I’m finally 100% happy with the site, but I think we’re starting to get there.

Anyway, just below is a screen-shot of what the Dashboard looks like currently, but before I let you look at that, please honour my request for feedback, and use the comments system to let me know:

  • what additional functionality you would like the Dashboard to have?
  • what options you would like to control on the site?
  • what sort of information you would like a profile page on the site to display?

Thank you :)

Sounds good. Will it be possible to edit chapters that have already been approved? We’ve discussed the problems with that.

More importantly, I think there should be an option to let you make changes to a chapter that hasn’t been approved. So that moderators can check it, ask for changes if need be and those changes are then easy to do.

As it stands at the moment, authors are able to edit their chapters for 24 hours from the date it was last edited.. So in theory, someone could edit it every 23 hours, and would retain the ability to edit it forever more.

Obviously this is not a great situation as it is possibly open to abuse (although unlikely), but also, as you correctly stated, it means that if a chapter isn’t approved, and the author takes longer than 24 hours to come back to fix the problems, they’ll lose the ability to do so.

To remedy this I’m going to change it so that unapproved chapters (and stories) can be edited for as long as they’re still unapproved, but remove the ability for them to be edited once they are approved.
